Richard Spoor. Chairman. Richard Spoor was an active field archaeologist at many digs in the Near East, working in Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Turkey, the Lebanon, and Syria. During his five years at Tell Sabi Abyad he concentrated upon the excavation and the interpretation of the complex building history of the central tower in the Middle Assyrian fortress. Like so many others he has now changed his career into something more substantially paid. Starting as a succesful IT process manager, he now offers his services to the clients of Getronics. e-mail:

Olivier Nieuwenhuyse. Treasurer. Olivier Nieuwenhuyse came to Syria for the first time in 1990 as a student of archaeology. He has been working in the country ever since. From 1991 onwards he has been a member of the Sabi Abyad project, starting as a supervisor, and gradually becoming a specialist on the prehistoric pottery. He has also worked at other archaeological projects in Syria, Lebanon and Turkey. He is a regular publisher, both for a scholarly as well as for a non-scientific audience. e-mail:

Evert Frolich. Vice chairman. Evert lived in Deir ez-Zor, northeastern Syria, for three years (1997-2000) working for Shell. A regular visitor of the excavations at Tell Sabi Abyad, he became fascinated by the ancient civilizations brought back to life by a decicated team in cooperation with people from the local village. At the time already an enthousiastic supporter and a skilled "water carrier" for the team, Evert has recently retired and is now contributing his efforts to the continuity of this unique project. e-mail:

Renske Dooijes. Secretary. Started out as a Classical Archaeologist, from 1995 onwards employed as a conservator, specialised in Ceramics and glass, at the National Museum of Antiquities, Leiden, The Netherlands. Runs a private conservation workshop in Amsterdam. Assisted the Sabi Abyad project as a conservator, working on the earliest pottery from Syria found there. Also worked as a field-conservator at excavations in Greece and Turkey. e-mail:

Mikko Kriek. Comittee member / Designer. Mikko Kriek has been part of the Sabi Abyad project since 1996. After two seasons as a supervisor, he became the regular draftsman of the excavations. In addition to drawing the architecture and excavated artefacts in the field, he is also responsible for preparing these graphic images for publication. Mikko also works as an archaeological draftsman and illustrator at the Archaeological Centre of the Free University of Amsterdam, and as a free-lance illustrator for his own firm, BCL Archaeological Support. e-mail:
